Advising

The ESS Office of Student Services assists applicants and students in all aspects of advising, including interpretation of College and UW requirements. Faculty advisers are available to assist students in academic matters, including choosing elective courses that build an appropriate academic background for their chosen major. For information on how to apply to the major, go to How to Apply.

For advising help, send an email to essadv@uw.edu. For urgent questions, contact the ESS Office of Student Services at (206) 543-8904.

Departmental Honors Program

The Departmental Honors Program is designed to expose students in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences to the practice of science as it is carried out at a creative and professional level, and to enable their participation in the scientific process. Visit the Honors page for more information.

Graduating Senior Priority (GSP) Information

Graduating senior priority (GSP) allows seniors to register on the first day of Registration Period I for their final two quarters and can be helpful in getting entry to popular classes. You must have submitted a graduation application by certain deadlines to be eligible. For more information, see the UW Student Guide.

Graduation Information

You should apply for graduation no later than two weeks into the quarter you plan to graduate, and it is strongly advised that you apply at least one quarter prior to that. You must meet with the undergraduate adviser to review your transcripts and to fill out the graduation application forms. Visit the Graduation Page for more information.

June Commencement

If you wish to be in the Commencement Ceremonies in June at Husky Stadium, you must also register yourself at the commencement website starting in May. On the morning of Commencement Day, the Department of ESS holds a Graduation Party for students, family, and friends.

August Graduation

If you will complete your degree in August and you want to be in the June Commencement Ceremonies, then you must meet the spring quarter deadline with your papers.

GEO Club

The GEO Club is an undergraduate organization that sponsors events and special programs for ESS undergraduate students. In previous years, the Club has organized and sponsored trips to Hawaii, as well as the annual Holiday Raffle Fund-Raiser. For more information, visit the GEO Club Website.

Scholarships and Awards

Through the donations of alumni and friends of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences, a limited number of undergraduate scholarships are available. Students are notified by email of scholarship application deadlines. These departmental scholarships are awarded each spring to students in the major who will be continuing that fall. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and need. Interested students should be sure to have an updated FAFSA form on file by March 1st.

NASA Washington Space Grant Consortium has scholarships for freshmen and transfer students who are majoring in science, mathematics or engineering. Visit the website for more information.

In addition, the Undergraduate Scholarship Office in 310 Mary Gates Hall has a comprehensive list of scholarship opportunities available to UW students. We encourage you to take some time to stop by their office or access their website.
