Department Computer Resources

Large Computer ClassRoom (LCCR)

The Large Computer ClassRoom (LCCR) consists of 28 workstations, 2 firewalls, 1 fileserver, and 2 projectors. The 28 workstations run Fedora 13 (x86_64) and are set up to run VirtualBox with Windows XP guest OS. The workstations each contain a Core 2 Duo processor with 2 GB RAM. Available applications include Microsoft Office XP, Open Office, Matlab, ARC/GIS, and a number of utilities and open source applications. Use of the Linux side of these workstations requires a Linux account and extended computing support membership, but can provide access to background computing numbercrunch power.

Small Computer ClassRoom (SCCR)

The Small Computer ClassRoom (SCCR) consists of 20 workstations, 1 firewall, 1 fileserver, 2 scanners, and 1 projector. The 20 workstations each contain a quad-core Pentium Core i5 processor with 4 GB RAM. All workstations dual-boot, running Windows XP Pro, as well as Fedora 13 (x86_64) set up to run VirtualBox with Windows XP guest OS. Available applications include Microsoft Office XP, Open Office, Matlab, Google Earth, IDL/ENVI, ARC/GIS, plus a number of utilities and open source applications.

Graduate Student WorkRoom (GSWR)

The Graduate Student WorkRoom consists of four Core-2-Duo 2 GB RAM workstations running Windows XP with dual displays, one Pentium-4 2 GB RAM workstation with dual displays runnning Windows XP, two workstations each with dual dual-core-xeon with 4 GB RAM running linux/VMware master and an optional Windows guest, and one Apple MacPro tower. Accessories include a high volume duplex capable HP4250dtn laser printer, a HP5850 color inkjet, two small flatbed scanners, a Nikon slidescanner, a 36" wide large-format scanner, and a poster plotter.

Graduate Student Pool

The ESS Graduate Student pool contains two mac laptops, two windows laptops, two digital cameras, and two gps units available for Grad Student use.

Educational Pool

Dave Rupp (Dept Office Front Desk) maintains a pool of laptops and projectors for ESS class and educational use only. Currently the pool contains two Windows XP laptops, one Mac laptop, two projectors, and an assorted collection of laserpointers, wireless powerpoint clickers, video extension cables, and power extension cords.

Server Room (SR)

Additional ESS Department computer server resources include the department computer cluster (argon, neon, radon, krypton, and xenon) plus the hpc compute cluster (10 dual xeon compute nodes plus fileserver). Extended support membership is required for access to the hpc compute cluster. A department account is required for the argon cluster.
