Current Research Interests:
Dr. Mercer is a Principal Physicist at the Applied Physics Laboratory and a Research Associate Professor in the Geophysics Program at the University of Washington. He received a B.S. in Physics in 1968 and a Ph.D. in Geophysics in 1983, both from the University of Washington. Dr. Mercer is a member of several professional societies, has served on many national committees, and is currently an Associate Editor of the U.S. Navy Journal of Underwater Acoustics.

During his tenure of 35 years at APL, underwater acoustics has been the central theme of Dr. Mercer's research. His studies have covered the spectrum from basic research to advanced applications. He has authored or co-authored scores of scientific and technical publications and has served as Chief Scientist on numerous at-sea expeditions. He currently leads a team of scientists and engineers at APL and frequently shares PI responsibilities with Dr. Robert C. Spindel, Dr. Bruce Howe and Dr. Robert Odom.
